I think I drove my wife nutz when I was looking for a pair of biners. There are no climbing shops near me so I got some heavy duty ones from Menards. No idea of the rating but i would bet I could tow my car with them. I do not fear my biners. Shortly after buying them I went on the Hoosier Hang. Biners preformed fantastic then I won a pair of Dutch Clips on straps in the raffle that were generously donated by Barefoot Child. Now my biners are semi retired. The Duch Clips are fantastic.

I found on ebay four Black Diamond wiregate biners (used, but couldn't tell) for I think it was $19 shipped. Been a while. They look frail compared to my wyott military, and old Black Diamond auto-lock double-lock. The wiregate threw me off at first, but I have total confidence in them now. Ebay can be good at times.

    Big Guys like me

never even consider non-climbing rated carabiners. So I don't get to experience such failures.

I wonder if the anecdotal evidence of the "lightweights" performing in a satisfactory manner for some hangers and failing for others might be due to the QC? Companies like Black Diamond, Mammut, Climb High and all the others who manufacture the "right stuff" test samples from batches after heat treating. To destruction. As I recall, Black Diamond tests ALL of their 'biners to the loaded weight (or at least they used to when they were Chouinard Equipment).

Rest assured that the non-UIAA 'biners do not get that scrutiny. So some batches are strong; others are weak.

    I choose security!

Glad to hear you're alright! Dutch clips are the way to go in my opinion. But if you're going to use carabiner, there's only one way to go: The Camp Nano 23 wiregate carabiner. Just 23 grams, they're wonderful.
If there's two ways to take my comments, assume it's the lighter and funnier of the two.

I'll go Dutch Clips here in a bit but I do use carabiners for various purposes, usually just low load connectors. I do need a few high performance ones and will look into the ones you linked.
