    Fids and Splicing Tools

    G,day all, newbie here.

I recall seeing a thread that showed fids and splicing tools. Tried searching today for both keywords yet nothing was returned. Could someone please point me in the direction to be able to fabricate and purchase the fids and splicing tools pictured in some of the threads?

    Thanks.

Cosmic... I personally dont use a fid per say. My splicing tools are

.024 stainless leader wire for anything smaller then 7/64 amsteel blue and

.035 stainless leader wire for 7/64 up through 3/16.

Ive found that above 3/16 if you taper and wrap the end nice and tight with masking tape you dont need any tools.
I am not a gram weenie. , But Im starting to see the merits!!!

I've recently converted to Opie's method of pulling with some wire... but I started with a plastic sewing needles:

they worked well until I moved to some zing-it... too small for anything but wire. Personally, I still prefer the plastic needle for the amsteel... maybe because it was my first?

I have a spool of wire ties. Sort of like bread ties but on a spool. Just cut the length I want strip the plastic off and fold in half. Works great.

Thin gauge picture hanging wire works well for both amsteel and zing-it. Don't have it right in front of me, but I think it is in the 22 gauge range.

20 gauge aluminum picture wire works for me on everything from 1.75 mm zing it to 7/63 amsteel. I double the wire feed it down the length of the splice bury, hook the tapered end into the doubled setion and pull it all back thru - no problem. Super easy and super cheap, no tools.

For amsteel I use the wire from cable coax wire. For the lash it/zing it I use a single strand from telephone wire. If you are like me and just have spare laying around it is free, otherwise they can easily be found at any home improvement store for cheap.

I bought a "Loop Turner" from JoAnn fabrics and use masking tape on the ends of the rope to make it pointy. I used this on 7/64ths amsteel blue. Very cheap and works!!
