Similar story: Water hidden from view by leaf litter, 3" water, "Splash!".But I was atop a hill, & had no camp shoes.

When I went to bed, the ground was dry, getting up for a call of nature trip, I went SPLASH! Quite a shock as the temp was just over 35o and when I got up 3 hrs before, the ground was as dry as when I went to bed.

I too someday will camp over water, but I do worry as having slept right next to running water, it increased my need to pee by about 50% so maybe it's not such a good idea for me.

Another similar experience here. We camped at the base of a big hill in the Smokeys a few weeks ago. I set the head end of my rig over a dry creek bed (no rain forecast all week). Woke up the first morning to find a few inches of water in there.

Bad news #1 - the water awoke the mosquitoes which tried to eat me.
Bad news #2 - the roused mosquitoes provoked a herd of creepy daddy longlegs living in the trees - these congregated on my tarp and head.

Harmless yes but yucky nonetheless. *twitch*

Iraq 2003. I had my hammock set up for months by that point. We got a heavy rain and the grove of trees I was living in turned into a swamp. Stayed that way for weeks.

I've actually been looking for an over the water spot but not much success yet. I can find creeks to camp over only their too loud for sleeping. I think a couple of trees leaning out over one the lakes around here might work but nothin yet.

Yup. Those slap straps just eased him into the water real nicely
