    NuB question about insulation

No hammock yet, but will eventually have one. Just collecting info now.

So if I go with a double layer hammock, I can slip some type of pad in between the layers to keep my backside warm, right? I already have one of those blue pads from Walmart that I roll-up and take when in a sleeping bag in a tent. Will one of those work?

I'm reading about eggshell (egg crate?) pads being used between the layers. What's going on with those?

What about the self-inflating sleeping pads?

Feel free to elaborate in your response. I'm an info junkie.

Blue pads work well, lots of folks use them, they're cheap, so there's no concern with "custom trimming " them to suit your needs. The "Egg crate/ shell" ones are reputed to be less likely to slide around and give ya a cold spot in the middle of the night. The $100-plus price of a Therma-rest blow up pad just scares this cheapscate off, so maybe someone else can answer that one. You seem to have the right idea, doing a lot of research before making a commitment. Good luck.

I used a thermarest before in my double layer and it can move over the course of the night. If you are handy or know someone who is handy with a sewing machine you could make a pad extender. Its basically some fabric you slide your pad into that has wings to provide more shoulder insulation. Check out HF member Shug's videos for an example of one. Many here use underquilts which hang under your hammock but they can be an expensive option when starting out. Double layer hammocks also provide a little more protection form mosquitos.

Cheap closed cell foam pads cut and rearranged to look like this.

Will get you through 3 season use. At least it does me. But I am a warm sleeper, so it may not work for all. I doubt it'll work to get my girlfriend down to cold weather.
