    Must have been the lip at the top edge, just going by I was told when I was up there.

    Yeah wasn't to bright hanging my pack. probably wasn't to smart chasing the bear with just a headlamp either.

    HA. You had plenty of company, when I was there Monday there were a lot of packs lying around and hanging from trees. Even more fun, they were putting Garcia canisters in trees - huge mistake, the only way to get into them is to drop them on rock and break 'em.

    Yeah, chasing the bear wasn't ideal... but you lucked out and got the pack back. I hiked with someone recently whose first backpacking trip in Yosemite ended abruptly when a bear snatched his pack - he chased but could not keep up and had to listen to the bear somewhere in the brush tearing apart his gear in search of lunch. And then he had to clean it up and hike back to the car.

    One thing I noticed in CA was there was a lot of ground dwellers. Only saw 2 other hammocks the whole trip.
