The hardest part is keeping my cat out of the hammock; if there's a hammock up, he's got to be in it. I generally leave my hammocks out overnight after treating them, just to make sure. Vet bills are WAY TOO expensive!

My dad accidentally killed my cat several years back (Maybe 15 years or so) with Permethrin used for treating cattle. One cat survived with extensive treatment and monitoring. The other didn't make it, she was one of the prettiest animals I had ever seen too.

You cats at the very best will start seizing off and on for a day or so then come out of it and walk around twitchy and spaztic for several days after exposure to Permethrin. Most likely they will die.

We found this out the hard way. Permethrin has also been loosely linked to early on set Parkinsons disease.

I'll just take my chances with the bugs. Even in my single layer with no UQ I never had a problem with getting my back chewed on. I could hear buzzing through the fabric though.

Just done my Blackbird as the Scottish midges were dragging themselves through the holes in the noseeum. Not been back out to retest yet but I'm hoping it does the trick. Crawling into the hammock to escape the things and then watch them haul their way in just inches above your face is not good.

Wow. I've dodged a bullet with that stuff...use it all the time, and take no special precautions for my cats. Lucky Gringo, and lucky cats...Thank you!

I started out using the spray, but now I use the soak for anything I apply it to. I soak the hammock along with my hiking clothes. I got irritated watching the spray mist fly away in the wind.

If you're talking about the Parkinson's Institute study that was released last year, don't forget that they didn't bother to look at any of the other chemicals that were mixed in with the permethrin and they were talking about people who apply it for a living. Their report contained specific exclusions that most reports don't bother to quote like, "Other pesticide exposures such as hobby gardening, residential exposure, wearing treated garments or dietary intake were not assessed."

The concentration of permethrin in products approved for use on cats is between 0.05% and 0.1%. The permethrin that we use is usually 0.5%, so that's 5x to 10x higher concentration. Vets freak out about permethrin because the dog products are 30% or more and they can make a cat seize up and croak in no time but the concentrations we use can be just as deadly. Permethrin is a twitching, seizing, vomiting, ugly way to go for a cat and it really takes so little effort to avoid.

Permethrin Soak Tip: If you get a bucket with a lid and a collander that fits on top of the bucket, you can soak your hammock or clothes in the bucket and then let them sit for a while in the collander on top of the bucket. Let the excess solution drip back into the bucket and you end up being able to put the lid on the bucket and reapply it next year without needing to buy more or treat a buddy's hammock and clothes too.

(is that how you spell collander?)

    .

GREAT tip. I'll be keeping that in mind. So I take it it will last a year already diluted?

(is that how you spell collander?) Well, I wasn't sure myself, so I spell checked. It's "colander" according to it (whoever "it" is)

The spray Sawyers is 24 ounce, Same solution strength as the soak.kit but a lot cheaper.
I use any liquid left from soaking in a pressure sprayer or a brush and coat the patio and foundation.
I will get new stuff nest year. Containers have to be vacuum pack to stay viable for 6 months.
Plus I have three cats and don't risk the liquid around.
