I think it is just a matter of cinching the whoopie after placing it above the Marlinspike hitch. You have to compress the Marlinspike hitch, or the whoopie can slide over it, twisting the toggle on the way. I like to tighten the hitch by pulling on the bitter end of the tree hugger before placing the whoopie over the hitch.

HB, what you describe is similar... you are cinching the Marlinspike hitch by burying the whoopie into it. You can do exactly the same thing with the whoopie above the hitch. The point is, make sure the Marlinspike hitch is well compressed and tightened before you move on.

To make the whoopie attachment above the Marlinspike hitch an offshore rig, one would seize the whoopie so that the eye is closed around the hugger. Not practical in this application.

.... or one could use Dutch Biners when they're available ... did I mention Dutch Biners?

WARNING: Will discuss Rhurbarb Strawberry Pie and Livermush at random.

Glad to hear that you were not hurt. You will propbably know for sure what happened. I guess you can chalk this up to a visit from Mr. Murphy of "Murphy's Law' fame. SWhich something along the lines of "if it can go wrong it probably will and at the most at the worst possible time".

The heavier polyester straps make a knot that's hard to tighten down, so the knot can twist the toggle when you get into the hammock. Once I felt a slight jolt during a windy night, but I figured it was a loose tree hugger tightening on the tree. When I got up next morning I found that the whoopie had slipped around a twisted toggle and was hanging from one shoulder of the knot only. Another good breeze would have put me on the rocks underneath my hammock. Since then, I've either used thinner Harbor Freight straps or put a sliding whipping (a la Griz) or Scarab knot on the whoopie sling. One of these days I'll replace the beads on my whoopies with little bars of wood or aluminum with two holes in them. Could call them "Dutch Toggles." Congratulations, Dutch. You've just gone generic!

Just put one bead on one leg of the eye, as normal, and another above it on both legs.
