Tutorial - SUL BugSock

Simple, but it takes some setup. I've got sheets of Masonite laid on the floor in the workshop to form a 6' x 10' work area. The cut lines are drawn out with sharpie markers on the Masonite. The cutting is done with a hot knife by following the cut lines viewed right through the Tulle.

As the design changes, new lines are added. Problem becomes "which of the 47 lines should I follow?"

I think that hot knife sounds like 'da bomb. melting the sides together slightly would certainly help keeping the sides lined up for cutting.

I finished a larger BugSock last night. I went with 53" deep on this one to fit a WB Traveler. The weight ended up at 2.28 oz (64.5 grams). I also changed the arc on the bottom to maximize the room inside. Here's the layout.

I'm still liking that weight for a bigger bugnet!

It is an efficient use of material. If you were worried about tool, nanoseeum from thru-hiker would just about double the weight. But even then it is less than the lightest commercial produced sock I could find before I started this whole SUL trip.

Tough call on which of the type of netting is best. Just to recap what has already been discussed elsewhere.

Tulle - approx .28 oz/yd, $1.99/yd @ Joann. Cost for 7yds = $13.98

Nanoseeum - .7 oz/yd, $7.18/yd @ Thru-hiker. Cost for 7yds = $50.26 + shipping
(250% heavier, 360.8% more expensive)

Noseeum (Gray) - .96 oz/yd, $2.95 @ RockyWoods. Cost for 7yds = $20.65 + shipping
(342.86% heavier, 148.24% more expensive)

I'm satisfied with Tulle myself. For little tears I just zip them shut with some thread when I get home.

Fingernail polish remover (which contains acetone; I think) will remove sharpie ink; possibly paint thinner/methanol/heet will also. since the markers use alcohol related producs as the carrier for the ink, the same again should dissolve it- use paper towels, not the good shop towels....

...just wanted to thank skilled craftsman Papa Smurf -- and SGT Rock/JustJeff design gurus -- for two spectacular socks i just got in the mail. A tulle bug net, and a Momentum Ripstop winter sock of the same sock design as the bug net. The final weight on the BugSock = 1.87 oz. The final weight on the WinterSock = 6.52 oz. Pretty sweet!!! Thanks Thanks Thanks to all! Oh, and what an amazing Forum this is to inspire never-ending design and development!
