I have a big 4+ pound synthetic sleeping bag, which I have pretty much stopped using since I got into hammocking. I would rather freeze a little under a thin fleece blanket, than lugging that thing around!

And I absolutely agree that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger! That sentence was actually said a few times at the first Danish HF Hang, where we had an unforeseen rainstorm

Man o man... I get scared looking for widow makers in trees in the winter time cause its harder to tell whats alive and whats dead...

I have no idea how to judge stability of a rock face / cave roof!!!

I'd have been scared all night long that a 2 ton slab would come loose on top of me!

Really cool hang - you're a crazy one that's for sure!

Thanks much for sharing - I'm shivering thinking about it

Actually, that thought crossed my mind more than once in the middle of the night. "I've put little wedges into rocks that are already showing a tendency to split, then loading those wedges with weight...and then trying to sleep underneath those rocks. What am I DOING?"

I have always wanted to do that in a Cowboy Hotel, or bluff shelter. Gonna have to look into chocks and quick draws! Very cool!

That's awesome. It's the first time I can recall reading about a cave hang.

I think it has been brought up before (if I'm not mistaken... but I was one time) , but I think this may be the first actual report of doing a cave hang.

There has been lots of talk about using rock climbing hardware & slings for hanging amongst the rocks, as in above tree line, one tree & a cliff, rock overhangs, etc, & I think a few have done just that. But I remember hearing anyone saying "I hung my hammock in a cave".

Actually, we didn't see any bats until right as I was leaving the cave, and it flew into the back of my head on its way out too! Maybe the Army should study my pack for its radar-deflecting properties...

Funny thing that. I brought a headlamp, plus one more headlamp just in case. When we got to the cave, the main headlamp batteries were dead. The backup headlamp was so dim as to be unusable. But I brought a glowstick! I cracked it...and it didn't glow. I tried my last hope: A combo butane lighter/flashlight, and it worked! But you have to hold the flashlight switch in the on position. 1 right out of 5, story of my life.
