"Raisin capital of the world..." Preach it Brother! My brother-in-law is from Stockton. He sends us raisins from that area on a regular basis. They are indeed the fattest, plumpest, most delicious raisins on the planet. It's really the only reason I go to visit him.

Regarding hammocks,my wife also questioned my sanity until she slept in one. She's now a diehard fan. Welcome to the wonderful world of hammocking.

BTW...the only time I couldn't find a place to hang my hammock was in CA. (Joshua Tree) If I would have had climbing choks I would have been set.

    Welcome to the forum!

You'll fit it really well here.

I keep telling myself that hammock hanging is a hobby and I can stop at any time.

@ shug--Wow! It's like a celebrity encounter. Your essentials for noobs series on youtube should be required viewing for all budding and would-be hangers. Informative and entertaining! Thanks for all your efforts in trying to get us noobs off the ground.
You're gonna need a bigger hammock

I lay in my hammock like all the rest ... it is getting in and out I do different.
Glad the videos helped .... you new folk have tons more info and options to digest than when I came into hammock style.
Enjoy and be patient ..... it has a learning curve.

I will second that !!! We Californian's are few, but proud. Looking forward to hearing trip reports from some of the locals. ( Maybe a group hang in the near future? )

    @tim

In no time, you will be taking advantage of the backyard to explore all of the possible upgrades you have read about for your hammock. Every day off will be an excuse to sleep outside testing your gear.

BTW... I think we all can relate to how our families view us with this obsession. Just as DUTCH said, "Wait until you start making gear!" When I pulled our thread injecting machine out of the corner of the garage to start some small projects, my wife started to make a pile of all the items that needed sewing

HANG ON !!! Its a great ride.

Actually, I already have an excuse all lined up: child #6 will be arriving in two weeks time. If he sleeps through the night--I win. If not, I throw out the ultimatum: "either that child sleeps outside or I do." Fast-forward to Timabababaluka hanging outside in the backyard--I win. It's all about the silver lining (although I'm still having trouble coming up with a silver lining for the Missus refusing to unlock the front, back, and garage doors (or trying to find a set of keys for the recently changed locks to the aforementioned doors )).

@ Lizzie, Brian, orangebananas, and Nojack-- it's nice to have hangers so close to home. As Nojack intimated earlier: we're small but plucky... and hopefully emerging (after all, the Sierras are a great place to hang).

@ Nojack--Actually, I am material-gathering for a DIY hammock that centers around PapaSmurf's Boy Scout beginner's kit (I'm trying to create a solid nucleus of future hangers in the Central Valley). PapaSmurf put a lot of thought into this serviceable and economic kit. Here's a link for any interested:

And yes, my wife is wondering where her sewing machine keeps disappearing to, and why I'm spending so much time in the garage ("We have a sewing machine?" ).
You're gonna need a bigger hammock
