    Cant decide

I am would like to purchase my first hammock but I dont want to take the $300+ leap just yet. There are a number of hammocks on ebay for sale and i like the look of the jungle style hammock. Does anyone recommend going that route to start? Primarily want something to get me off the ground while hunting. thanks-B

Better off doing this in my opinion.

Welcome aboard by the way. I would look at this thread and check out some of the hammocks mentioned. There are a ton of different ways to go.

I agree! PapaSmurf's Scout hammock kit is about as cheap and hassle-free an introduction as a person can get. Technically, you don't even need to do any sewing if you don't want (though I imagine after a couple hangs you'll want to protect your baby with some hems )--an overhand knot on either end can replace the sewed channel.

Also seconded--great thread to get you acquainted with the myriad of options available (anywhere from 'cheap' (me), to "Honey, I've just taken a 2nd mortgage out on the house" (ultralight thruhike guys)).

Welcome, and hope you find what you're looking for.
You're gonna need a bigger hammock

Welcome to HF. A hammock does not have to cost big bucks to be a good hammock. Check out the No-see-um-no-more hammock by Hammock Bliss. It is a mighty fine hammock with excellent an bug net built into it. It can be found on the web for $60-70 dollars. I bought mine on line from Sports Authority (free Shipping). Check out Sgt Rock's review here http://hikinghq.net/gear/bliss-hammock.html.

Some great and inexpensive hammocks from some great companies out there. Hammock Bliss, ENO, Grand Trunk, etc. Just a little more and you can get a decent setup including tarp from Claytor. I would however avoid the 'military jungle hammocks' you can find dirt cheap online and in surplus stores. And consider: If you go 'all in' and purchase one of the higher-end camping hammocks you can recoup nearly the full purchase price selling it in the forums if you decide hanging high isn't for you.

    Insulation:KAQ Lost River UQ & Thermarest-Ridgerest pad - GoLite UltraLite 3-Season Quilt
    Tarp: 8x10 polyethylene camoflage tarp
