How do I estimate stuff sack size?

OK, my vintage thread injector is working perfectly, I made a ripstop pillow last night stuffed with IX (cause that's what I happened to have sitting in front of me). Tonight I'm going to practice some Flat Felled seams and making some double-open stuff sacks like what my WBBB came with.

so how to I figure what size bag I'll need for my quilts and whatever else I plan on making? Thus far I've just been making random bags/pillows with whatever cutoffs I happen to have. But I don't want to make something bulkier than I have to if I can help it!

Cram it in an old larger stuff sack ..... squeeze it down, tuck it in, and measure then make one that size. What I do.

Heh, so simple even a caveman can do it.

I have plenty of "larger" stuff sacks...since that all I know how to make so far.

If you are an educated cave man, like the one who invented the wheel, you can Google "volume calculator" and "volume conversion" to find several useful online tools.

So how does that tell me what size stuff sack I need for my quilt?

Click the links on google, and you can find your volume, and use the conversion for it, as well, you silly goose!

Like others said, put it in an old larger stuff sack and squeeze it down into roughly a cylinder. Measure circumference and hieght of cylinder. If you want to get real technical, wrap the stuff sack with Glad wrap/cling wrap or what ever you call it in the kitchen to hold it's shape.

Make the stuff sack larger than you need. It will be easier to put in the sack and will be easier to compress in your pack if it's not stuffed so tight it becomes hard and riigid.

This post shows how to make a square bottom sack to an exact size.
