I've been using paypal since their inception. It's the other person you need to worry about more than paypal. I've been scammed with money orders, paypal has not bitten me yet even though I have had a few disputes that were resolved satisfactorily to me.

Do not leave money in your paypal account. Find a bank with a no fee no minimum balance requirement. Tie that bank account to your paypal account. Paypal has changed some policy's in the last year including the ability for them to auto debit your bank account if someone files a dispute over money they sent you or if someone hacks your paypal and the default is for it to be withdrawn from your attached bank account. If they use your credit card to fund it you have more protection from the CC company than you do from paypal.

If all your doing is small occasional purchases you'll find that it is easier, faster, cheaper, and safer than checks or money orders. If you fund payments with your credit card paypal warns you about them not being able to protect you, they want you to use a bank account. You won't need paypal to protect you if you use a CC. As a buyer if you file a dispute with the credit card and they will lock up the payment until the dispute is resolved, nearly every time they will side in favor of the consumer until the issue is resolved. Credit cards have strict regulations they have to follow to resolve disputes, paypal not so much.

Paypal is not a bank, it is not a credit card company. It does not have to follow many of the rules and regulations that govern both of those.

I assume the security key is a secure browser thing assigning you a unique identifier. They charge you because each key issued costs them money. It's another way for them to make money off you. How much are they asking for a key?

    I don't think that is a problem !
    Why?
Because that's what they are really scared of.

Same with banks here in Sweden,
over here i guess 90% of all bank transactions is done over Internet.
The banks earns money like H*LL on this and they scared stiff that
    people would stop.
So, they make sure the customers don't even see any security breeches,
they plug the hole, shut up and pay the customer.

And i am pretty sure PayPal do the same !
Used them for years , never had a problem with them

It's $5 and I suppose up front is more up front than simply adding it to their normal charge...like all business is conducted BTW (raise their taxes and they charge you for it).

Sounds like using my plastic will give me more control over stuff. It also is sounding more like my limited purchases will reduce the chances of fraud or theft to a more acceptable level. I probably will simply stick to HF related vendors and buy new as well. Good info folks, thanks.
