    San Francisco Backpacking

Alright guys. I'd be lying if I said my undergraduate school choice was not partially being influenced by the relative location of it to some good backpacking spots, so is there anything happening up in San Francisco? I see there are some mountains and possibly redwoods nearby but i'd like some first, or at least second hand knowledge.

    Thanks!

Within 3-4hrs of SF you can have lots of big trees either north or east of you. I hike a lot east of you in the Sierra's from Yosemite north to Shasta. There are also great places to go north, Redwood Natl Forest, Trinity Alps will get you started... A short trip to the Santa Cruz Mtns will give you a fix and some pretty cool views.

If you head north 30 minutes you can hike some pretty cool trails at Point Reyes National Seashore. I end up going there fairly often because of its close proximity to my home. Be warned though, finding a good hanging spot can be tricky there... usually I have to wander off the trail and stealth camp for the night since their actual sites are a bit lacking in the tree department...
I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I have not lived.
