Still trying decide on straps vs. tree huggers

By the way....I REALLY like this site! Thanks ATTroll!

The only thing I saw at the Hot Springs hangout that is still intriguing me is the concept of straps instead of tree huggeres. It sure looked easy to lash them around the tree. I read Just Jeff's info about his testing of different styles and at one point he said he didn't feel the need to fix something that wasn't broken (paraphrasing here).

I'll admit, the only reason I'm still thinking about this is because I think it would be much easier to adjust the hammock, but I also read on WB that after a while, it's second nature to tie one up. I don't really mind tying the figure eight on my HH.

So what are the con's of using slap straps? I know you need a drip string, but what else am I not thinking of here? Thanks as always!

Yeah, but then I started tinkering again!

I think straps are marginally heavier, depending on what kind of cord you use. The weights are pretty close to what comes stock on the HH. Straps are a bit easier, with less fiddle factor, to set up. But like you said, it all becomes second nature pretty quickly. So changing it may save a 30 seconds during setup or something...is it worth the mod? Well, if you're a tinkerer it is...

Six of one, half dozen of the other.

The advantage of my newest project will be the ability to adjust the hammock from under the tarp to account for wind changes and such. Haven't decided if that's worth the extra ounces, though.

    Straps or no

I, too, am considering switching to straps. My main concern is how they attach to the hammock. I haven't seen anything that goes into any detail on how this is done. I have a HH and am reluctant to cut the cable tie that holds the bag that hides the connection between my existing rope and the hammock. Just how is this conversion from rope to strap accomplished?

Radio, I've seen some people just cut the HH spectra line down to about 2 feet and tie the end to the strap (Hammock Engineer did this). I've also seen people wind up the HH Spectra line (meaning don't cut it off) but just tie a biner to it around the 2 ft mark and attach the strap to the biner (BlackBishop did this I think).

Hammock Engineer did admit to feeling great anxiety when cutting the line, but he's ok!

I have heard slap straps mentioned several times, but I still don't know exactly sure what they are or how they are used.

Where can I read up on them?
