basically i am going to make the thru hiker quilt kit quilt, but encorporate a velcro foot area like the jrb"s and a head hole like the jrb"s. I am also going to add a drawstring for closing the foot end.

To recap: I am makig basically a jrb quilt with drawstrings at only the foot end, not needed at he head end. It will have 3.5 inch of loft and will take me down to below feeezing in comfort. It will be 72x48.

The drawstring at the head end of the JRB quilts is pretty effective at curving the quilt around your shoulders to keep out drafts. I'd give that more thought.

Good luck! Pics when you finish!

Also i would look into getting your down from stormcrow...and your ripstop from BWDD ...or even stormcrow...the thru-hiker kits is way overpriced
12oz of down from stormcrow will run you $78...and ripstop from BWDD will run you around $3 ....you can make the same quilt for around $100....saves you $40
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

What he said. Assuming the quilt fits you well, I can't imagine not having this feature now, even with me being a side sleeper.

Ike, I just finished making a wearable top quilt. I used BWDD green ripstop & Stormcrow's down. The finished size was 75"x41" with almost 2" loft. The slit for the neck hole is 13" across - it' a bit large, could have been 12". I used JRB omni-tape on the neck hole and on the bottom to create a footbox.

I essentially, made two short quilts, then sewed them together (except for the neck hole). I sewed the omni-tape on each half before joining them.

    All-in-all I'm pleased with it.

Ike, I know ... no pictures, it didn't happen, lol.

Here it is. The top and inside of footbox is made from BWDD's 1.1 ripstop and the inside is momentum taffeta from Outdoor Wilderness Fabrics www.ofwinc.com

The down is 800 FP from Stormcrow. I used 3/4" grossgain for the "belts".
