Don't let this happen to you!

Went on a group camping trip/hang over the weekend. I remember walking around looking at setups, and remarking to a buddy "I wouldn't hang off that tree, it's dead". I figured, hey... he probably shoved the tree to make sure it felt solid, HYOH and all that.

I won't name who hung this hammock, but as the rest of us were gathered around the group/campfire area, he got in his hammock to add a layer of long underwear pants. We all heard a crash:

The hanger was unhurt, and was still working his way out of the hammock as I took these quick cellphone pics.

I consider this a "near death" event. I don't know why the tree didn't fall directly into the other tree he was hanging from, but if it had I imagine the result would have been horrific. We all take our chances when we hang hammocks from trees, but try to make good decisions regarding tree choice, and as for me... "If you see something, SAY something!"

Glad it turned out to be a learning moment instead of a mourning one.
It was probably the bad luck from having a tent in the background.
    Trust nobody!

Its amazing how easy it is to get complacent...sometimes it takes little reminders like this to make you look around and go "hey! thats stupid!"

I'd much rather have my ego bruised than my body!

Oops, suppose it was better to happen when it did rather than in the middle of the night.

    Glad they're okay

"Wisdom is the ability to learn from the mistakes of others, because you do not have time to make all of them yourself." Thanks for this bit of Wisdom!

Close call. Good that no one was hurt. Always good to express an opinion where safety is concerned IMO.

Thanks for the timely reminder. Glad to hear that the only thing injured was the owners pride.

I am impressed that the dead tree pulled out by the roots. Could a live tree do that?
