Every hammock hangers worst nightmare. Sometimes you just have to be the jerk and tell someone that they should move their hammock. Better to intrude than have remorse.

Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

I arrived at the Texas fall hang late. There was a nice site near the main campfire. Looked good in the dark. I didn't even have to look up because I was warned first thing, even before "howdy" that the site in question was dangerous, full of widow makers. Thanks Uncle MJM & Texas Family.
    Looking out for each other!

One reason (well, not the "jerk" part) that I sometimes speak up when I read folks saying how a 500 lb or even a 1,000 lb cord or carabiner is good enough to hang from. Better safe than sorry, especially over an ounce or two.

Am glad no one was hurt.

Hence, BB58's rule number 1: when it comes to hanging trees, the smaller the better as long as it will hold me. Often a surprisingly small hardwood will hold me quite well, with very little flex.

BB58's rule #2: While hanging from the smallest trees possible, be as far away as possible from big trees that could crush me if the wind knocks them, or their big branches, down. This rule is tougher to obey 100% of the time than is rule #1.
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us....that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now.

Absolutely! As a novice hanger, I appreciate any tips people give, particularly those of the safety type. I can't imagine really thinking someone is a jerk for caring about my welfare

Even at MAHHA folks were careful to mention to everyone coming in to be extra vigilant for widowmakers and dead trees. There were a few reports of trees falling over and I saw plenty of huge boughs hanging precariously. The first 3 or 4 potential hang spots I picked out I rejected after realizing there were some dead standing trees within range. Not sure I would have paid that close attention left to my own devices.

I witnessed a large (12"+) tree come down at the recent MAHHA hang even before I had picked a hanging spot. Knotty saw the end of the fall. After that, we noticed a good many suspect trees.

Too bad only one person warned you about the poison ivy on the tree from which you hung! Lucky you, you aren't allergic to it.
