Spruce bows are a great insulater. Have been used for 1,000 of years
in the spruce moose forest for that purpose.

So I'm sure they helped and they smell wonderfull.

i'd rather you didn't cut down live tree branches unless you needed to do so to survive.

To be true . . . there are likely 100,000,000 locations were I would whole heartedly agree . . .

    . . . where I live we have about 100,000 billion trees . . .

and most of them will likely be cut, for to make 2x4's, to build your next home

    I guess it is a perspective/location thing.

When harvested properly in the right location it has absoultly no negitive impact on that evrioment.

Trees are being blowing down, branches tore off by weather all the time .

When harvested not mined it can be done so if you came to that location
the next day you would not even know it was done and if you did it was
    done improperly.

To be true to HF demeanor, and only sharing perspective,

The world truly has an insatiable appetite for wood/oil/electricity/food etc.

There are forests that are being harvested that are a direct cause to weather change equal to oil/coal/etc.

We as developed countries think we manage our forests, but that is debatable . . .

Telling the harvesters in Brazil/ where ever to stop . . .
    their livelihood ? ? ? ?
They laugh and continue to destroy forest canopy that sustains a cool jungle floor, that helps keep the world cooler.

Concerning cutting a few spruce bows for a bed in an OK location:
Some might say "Well if everybody did that where would we be ? ? ? "
But not every one even camps, let alone in the wilderness.

Whacking of branches as high as you can reach on both sides of a trail for a 110 feet is not good camping practices,
    but choosing a secluded location . . .

    . . . and enjoying awesome wilderness experiences . . .

    . . . priceless

In the ADK this activity is prohibited.... "2 - Never cut live trees or foliage. If you must build a fire, use only dead and downed wood." The same is generally true of the A.T. "Removing, damaging, or disturbing of vegetation, rocks, or other natural objects or artifacts is not allowed." Probably not ALL of the A.T., but it's listed as a "common prohibition" on the .org site.

So in the places I'd be likely to be camping, I wouldn't want to get caught doing this.

Not for me to judge though... just saying why I haven't and wouldn't be doing this unless my life literally depended on it. Besides, I do TRY to keep as "low impact" as I can, and while there might be a "right way" to do this, I have no reason to think that *I* know it.
