Baby Camping...

Hi all,

If any of you have kids.... Any ideas for taking a baby camping? What do you use for a crib where could i find a hammock crib? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I carried mine camping as soon as they could walk. We always "tented it" then. I don't recall doing it with an infant but we may have with our second son.


If you have a little ingenuity, you could fashion a knotted end hammock out of a small table cloth and rig up a stand for it out of some sticks and line. I'm picturing a swingset looking setup with 4 angled legs and center cross bar.

For a crib, I would suggest a deep diy bridge type hammock but add some bars at the bottom as well to make a sturdy and comfy base for the little one.
Don't know if it will be an good but it probably would work

The Clark Vertex has a little crib built in; sort of.

The material that joins the two hammock beds creates a large fabric 'crib' between the two hammock beds. Genuine Draft and I thought about getting one and making a couple of modifications to that area so it would work for our Bulldogge. Turns out, the dog HATES camping. So, we decided against it.

Just get a Blackbird and put the baby on the shelf.

Trek Light sells a small gear/junior hammock called the Versa Trek. 5 ft. long. $40.
Still would have to keep a close eye on the little one, so they don't try to climb out.
I'd probably stick with car camping & a portable crib just to be safe (and sane).

We've taken all our kids camping within the first few months of birth - sort of a family tradition. However, for safety reasons it was always car camping and this was before I discovered the beauty of hammocking. With the baby, I think I would still opt for a tent though. If the baby is still waking up several times a night it would be easier IMO to take care of her in a tent. Also, a chair nearby is worth it's weight in gold.

Also, depending on how young, I would be concerned with them in a hammock alone due to the usual concern of them smothering their face. Similar concern as a waterbed might be.

We've used anything from folding cribs to just sleeping in a large bag w/ momma. Usually, the baby ends up in the bag w/ mom anyways so she can have peace of mind about whether the baby is too cold. If you insist on hammock camping (can't blame you), then I'd just toss the baby in with mom in a big warm bag w/ a large double-wide hammock.

Whatever you do, be safe and have a bail out plan just in case.

I posted this on another thread where a guy brought his hammock for a little one on a day hike .
I've been thinking about making a baby hammock to hang inside my hammock. that i could adjust to allow my little one to lay right on top of me but not risk me smooshing him. i have some pretty thin ripstop that is very breathable to prevent accidental smothering. I like the bridge idea, need to give that some thought. I also want to get out with the kid as soon as possible.

Sorry, we took the kids out early but were car camping and used a porta-crib in a small dome tent. I can remember our oldest (2 1/2) telling her little brother (15 months old) as they were supposed to be sleeping, "It okay. Don't cry." Today that 2 1/2 year old has just gotten her driver's learners license and the 15 month old is taller than I am and wears a size 13 shoe! Time flies!
