I just broke my favorite pair of aluminum sticks, and I also thought they would make a great set of toggles.

Somewhere to look would be BassPro (and Cabelas too I suspect). They custom cut arrows for archers for a proper fit. I was able to get 6 ~ 3" carbon fiber shafts for free.

I got my idea from this thread actually: cutting down an aluminum knitting needle to 3" sections. It works great!

I use three inch pieces cut from an aluminum arrowshaft. I used a pipe cutter to cut the sections

"Don't think that should happen if the hammock is on the knot and not the toggle."

Spot on, though for some a bit of extra stout can make up for rampant chaos.

3" trimmed down aluminum tent pegs. Works great and seems sturdy enough for me not to worry. Have used random sticks as well with succes.

Used to use my trekking pole. Then I would need the pole for a short day hike. I use two pieces of aluminum tubing, 3" long. They are about 3/4" diameter, but in my setup I put the whoopie directly on the toggle, not over some knot, so they need to be able to hold the full weight of me and my system.

Sturdy Stakes which are plastic coated aluminum tubing sold at hardware and farm stores for staking out tomato and other plants. For a little over a buck you can make 4-6 toggles.
