    Picking a Hammock

Hey guys, I've been doing a lot of research on what type of hammock to get. I live in Minnesota and plan on getting a lot of use out of mine. I've been thinking the Warbonnet BlackBird looks pretty comfortable. Any suggestions or info you have would be great. Thanks a lot

My recommendation is to find a forum member(s) that have the hammocks you're interested in, meet up with them, and demo some gear. The folks here are great and always willing to show off they're stuff! I was on the fence between a HH and a WBBB. After meeting up with Cannibal and getting to try both, I left confident knowing what I wanted. I ended up going with the WBBB for the record.

That is a really good idea Flyboy. What I really like about this forum is how willing everyone is to help out people. How do you like sleepoing in you WBBB after getting one?

MAKE YOUR OWN GEAR!! there is almost nothing like reaping the benifits of your hands..especially when you aquire the cosomizability of making your own stuff, the wealth of skills you learn, and the experiences you have, and the $$$ you save by doing it yourself. i speak from experience..
    Thanks,
    Dan

    +1 on flyboy

My only advice is to start small and inexpensive to experiment with hanging styles and suspension, etc. I started off with a Hennessy (a great hammock) but slowly discovered my preferences and now I hardly ever use it, preferring open gathered hammocks instead. My 'goto' hammock is now a Grand Trunk Ultralight.

Now, my backpacking preference is ultralight or lightweight so I prefer simple, lightweight hammocks, so I often switch out with the Nano 7. Other hammocks are just too much for me, although they are great and comfortable. Try simple before you invest $$$ to see what works, unless you have money to burn

I am still new, but after listening to many folks tell about their own experiences, I decided to go ahead and buy the WBBB as my first hammock. As this was in Sept, it is still my only hammock. I have no regrets, and have become an admired camper in some circles. I did not find the cost of acquiring, perhaps, the cadillac of hammocks to be prohibitive.

i was in your shoes until Saturday. i didn't know which hammock i wanted so i searched HF and found the WBBB to have All favorable reviews. made in the USA. even Shug chose a Black Bird. anyway i just ordered a Black Bird DL and a Superfly as my first hammock. i'm confident that i made the right choice for me. i'll be posting my hammock "learning curve".
read HF watch the videos see what you think.

@Flyboy Awesome, hope you like it.

    @ everyone else
I like the idea of making my own and I noticed there was some instructional videos to help out too. How much cheaper is it to make one yourself? I don't have much experience using a sewing machine, however, I do pick things up quick and we do have one at the house. Also, how is the quality of a DIY hammock and tarp? Thanks again btw for everyone's suggestions.
