    Site Selection

There has probably been discussion on this before but I couldn't find it.

The more I know, the more I want to know.

I'm on vacation, and just went out for a dayhike with my traveler. It was sunny in the high 30's with a half inch/inch of snow on the ground and it was breezy.

I found a nice set of trees that were behind a very nice small horseshoe-shaped hill with the trees almost totally shielded from the wind. So, I didn't have to worry about wind.

I was, however, in the shade all day. It wasn't an issue; but when I broke camp, I realized how much warmer it was in the sun.

So what do you look for in a site, sunny or wind-shielded?

My first inclination is to go with wind shielded because just because it's sunny when you set up, doesn't mean it will be sunny for long.

Any other considerations for site selection?

    re

There sun can be hard to find since we are almost always up under trees to begin with, but can make a huge difference. On the other hand depending on what else you're doing you may spend most of your time at camp after dark anyway.

The catabatic zone is also something to keep in mind. Cold are will sink to the lowest point in the area just like water puddles up during a rain. If its cold to begin with, try and avoid these areas. If its hot, you might want to look for them.

I'll use different site selection criteriea depending on the circumstances of each camping trip. Differences can be because of temps., wind, rain, terrain, who I'm camping with. Things that always remain the same when I select a site is that I'll always look up and make sure there's no widow makers above me and I check the trees I tie to, to make sure they are not dead.

Ditto what she said. It all depends on the time of year and weather and all kinds of other factors, including "what do I feel like doing at this particular moment?" I've been known to just pick a spot on a whim. . . Might be a nice view, or a nearby creek with a swimming hole, or whatever.
