    No-Sew Tyvek Jerry Chair/Ground Cloth

Got a little DIY this afternoon and finally made the Tyvek Jerry Chair/Ground Cloth that I've been wanting to do since reading the original Jerry Chair thread. I decided to go for a full length chair to keep the legs out of the dirt when sitting and provide more area under the tarp in ground cloth mode. Ground cloth portion is 6'x3', though I may reduce this to 5'x3' after a trial run.

Total weight is 4.9 oz. I used double sided carpet tape and Tyvek tape for the construction. The head rest is 7" tall and the head rest piece is carpet-taped and Tyvek taped for 8" onto the ground cloth portion. I put two layers of Tyvek tape around the border of the head rest for durability. I'm hoping that will prevent any punch-through. I used two 36" 1"x2" for testing as I don't have any trekking poles yet.

Since many already carry a Tyvek ground cloth, I thought this might be an interesting project for them to make it dual use.

Is the original thread in the donating members area? I ask because I can't access it using the link you posted.

Ah, yes, sorry, it is. This commercial version by MollyMac Gear is in a non-donating member section, so you can get an idea of the concept:

I forgot to add to my original post that I haven't put the seat pad holding pieces on yet because I was waiting on my seat pad, which is part of my new pack, the GG Mariposa Plus. As luck would have it, it was just delivered 5 minutes ago.

    Origami pole pocket fix

    First, thanks for the idea....
I was pondering what to make my Jerry Chair out of, and almost made one out of coated ripstop. Then I realized I should make it large enough to use as a ground cloth to serve double duty. But I felt as if I was re-inventing the wheel, my tyvek has been great why change it?
My only concern was the strength of this tyvek Tape / carpet tape seams.....
While brainstorming, I folded up some paper at work and realized the solution. I folded over the edges with about 2" of material creating a pocket of tyvek, which takes the pressure off the taped seams.
    Worked great...
The weight is now pulling laterally on the back taped piece, and the exterrior tape is under no stress. aka "super strong"
    1.made a 12” x 10” pattern with a simple V-shape
2.folded over the Tyvek 10” and traced the pattern and then added another line around the side perimeters 2”
3.cut off the end pieces and unfolded my pocket
4.folded in the edge pieces and added Tyvek tape under the flaps with the sticky side up
5.folded the pocket back over and taped the exterior seams with a few more pieces
6.presto- just trimmed to fit around my bivy sack and folded it down a bit to use as a chair

I didn’t need to make a pocket for my sit pad, it doesn’t slide on the Tyvek. I’m using my 1” black foam rubber camo turkey hunting pad which I trimmed up a little to fit under the lid of my Osprey pack.

I"ll attach some pics or thumbnails, and I posted them as an album under tyvek jerry chair (if that helps see it larger)

Cool, I have a 10' x 15' piece of Tyvek coming. I may try that.

I made one out of sil-nylon, but it was way too slippery. Just didn't work. THIS looks like a way around that problem. Thanks!

I saw Stoikurt's tyvek jerry chair on the Pinhoti hike last year. It also doubled as a groud cloth and worked well

    Ahh yes ... More specs

I started with a 3.5' piece from a 9' wide roll of Tyvek.
After the 10" fold over for the pole pouch, and the wash (which shrinks it a little)
My final piece is a little over 8' by a little over 3'
    It wieghs in at 5.5oz
And my trimmed sit pad from ****'s is 3.2oz
