I don't have much experience but in my skeeter beeter pro I can sleep in any position but on my back provided I'm the only one in it.
Sorry. Have no experience with the BMBH but I do sleep in a hammock every night and and spend much of the time on my side. Was originally sleeping in a DIY gathered end and now in a large Brazilian. Either case I need a pillow between my knees when side sleeping. Also found it works best to sleep so that you're facing the side your head is on. In other words, your face is near the hammock edge.
In my experience side sleeping in the hammock is less stressful on my back than doing same in a bed. Hope you find a way to make it work for you.

I think it depends on a number of factors. But for me, I have a DIY gathered end that I used 4 yards of 60" wide material that lets me curl up in the fetal position and is extremely comfortable. I am very much a side sleeper and sleep with my arm extended above my head so I made my hammock extra long to accomodate for this.
For me, it is heaven with 4 yards and 60" wide.
I've slept in my DIY hammock everynight for the last 3 months. I took a week of fiddling with my ridge line to find the right tension so I could sleep in the fetal position. It's the most comfortable I've ever slept. My hammock is 3 yards (forget how many inches that is) by 60". Not sure if you use a ridge line but my advice would be to try different tensions if you do.

Was you're diy hammock 3 yard before hemming and gathering, or after? How tall are you? I've been wanting to make a diy 9' x 4' or 4.5' (like the nano 7) but don't know what size to start with. I'm sure gathering will take a lot of space.
Oddly, at least with some of my hammocks, I have found just the opposite. Go figure. Or at least for fetal only. In my HH UL Explorer/Safari, or Speer 8.5, I have found an amazingly comfortable position by getting extra diagonal on my right side( at least in HH), knees up, back or top of my head against left HH edge and my feet/knees against the right/opposite edge. It took me a long time to stumble on this, and I have been really pleased with the comfort. No side "torque" at all. The hammock forms a ridge which is under my side supporting it, sort of a reverse banana effect. But I usually have it like you said when my legs are straight.
In the BMBH, doesn't matter, left side or right, legs partly fetal or straight, or flat on back: I'm just right down the middle of the hammock.
I think the key is to try different things and find what works for you. It's amazing how little shifts in a hammock can change things. Move a foot out and suddenly there's some fabric supporting your back. Things like that. You just have to get beyond flat bed paradigms. Not easy since most of us have spent much of our life in a bed.

Exactly! Plus, learning curve!
Yeah. I bought 3 yards from Joanne's and then put a channel on each end, gathered and whipped it. I'm 5'7". I think it's smaller than most but after a lot of experimenting I love it.
