The problem is many think a Hammock is the end goal . . .

. . . where as, it is just a part of a whole.

This forum is so focused on hammocks, with glimpses of the other parts.
Tweeking in the backyard would, to the others, also appear to be the end goal.

"The Others" just don't see that it is a small part of the whole, wilderness experiance, that we enjoy.

I will hang my hammock out back when I've got a migrane headache. It really helps me to feel better. So for me, just hanging is actually a visit to the doctor and it doesn't cost me anything.

Just saying the word "hammock" burns at least 2 calories!

I burned more energy laughing out of enjoyment in my hammock last weekend than I ever did in my tent.

Perspective, dreams, and accomplishments. Hammocking is more of a sport than watching another pro athlete fall from grace.

Well said, I really like this.
Revolution is about the need to re-evolve political, economic and social justice and power back into the hands of the people, preferably through legislation and policies that make human sense. That's what revolution is about. Revolution is not about shootouts.

    The zen of the hammock...

Or, if you're of a certain age, and your memory hasn't been left behind, "Zen and the Art of Hammock Maintenance." Or something like that. (I actually slogged my way through the entire, tedious original!)

That's how I see it as well.

I've never gone somewhere to 'go hammocking' (other than the backyard to tinker). My trips are always about hiking, or kayaking, meeting someone, or traveling someplace...the hammock is just the mode of camping along the way.

We spend a lot of time talking about and tinkering with hammocks because it's fun. And the subject is sufficiently complex to have lots of details to pursue. But in the end, applying the hammock knowledge to camp comfortably while following your other pursuits is the goal, IMO.

I constantly tinker in my Back yard, with sag, different diameter woopies, UQ suspension how tight or loose it should be. Pairing different quilts together in different temps. Laying in the hammock looking for cold spots. I is def doing something and when my wife ask me what I am doing I simply say Hanging she understands its all in a effort to insure my safety in the woods that how I look at it.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

    Yep. We tinker.

    We fiddle.
    We futz.
We change suspension systems for the sake of changing suspension systems.

And as Angrysparrow said, we do it because its fun! You never are wasting time when your activity pleases you. And I find hammocking to be extremely pleasing.

Now, if I can just figure out a way to get paid for it......

Don't leave out the duck hunting!! Hammocks are great for lazy man's form of duck hunting (napping), from a suspended blind.

I watched three squirrels and a woodpecker the other day. Most people just get annoyed by these critters but in the hammock it was total relaxation. Love the Hammock Therapy angle, I foresee many a prescribed therapy sessions in my future. In fact the wife finally tried out the hammock and it was hard to get her up! Now we're making her one of her own, I bet she'll need many a therapy session as well. Never thought of a hobby that I can do while sleeping, that is just brilliant! WOW, I had no idea I've been getting so much done! Sport, health (both physical & mental), safety testing, duck hunting, inner peace, religion, Entomology, bird watching, and gear tests! Whew - I've worn myself out thinking about how much I've accomplished...time to go kick back in the hammock and recharge
