Or, is the ridge pole too close to the hammock for that?
Like FLRider said. Depends on the tarp and conditions and how everything is rigged. Folks have done every thing from long tarps over the tops of the actual stands on down to small tarps rigged under the ridge pole.

    Options are good.

Is there a consensus on what type of rope to use for the lashings?

I have been using a tripod stand in my yard for over 20yrs. I use the 2" landscape poles for holding up young trees in new housing areas can be found for free. And I found a 12' long log like poll pointed at both ends that sits on top (of what my kids, now all grown) called my treepods when needed moved, no trees in our desert backyard. The hammock hooked on both ends of that poll with the downward weight and never moved no matter how rough the kids jumped in and out of that thing. (good memories) Never had a problem with a tarp, the ends at about 10' center to center held the ridge fine, remember I have a 6" thick poll for a ridgeline. The tarp tied on at the base of the legs in the back and top ridge if needed. The front could be flipped over top for more room or held out with sticks or trekking polls for more shade in front. I still have the Treepods here, But not the kids Hmmmm.

To tell the truth. I have used an old fan belt to hold up the teepee polls the kids made. And now I have the wire that they use to put up political signs, comes in a big H shape, cut the center out use the two long ones, and that was free. They took all of the signs off and left all of the wires stuck in the ground. Dangerous for them... free materials for me.

For traditional lashing, I like 550 paracord, but you could use a poly cotton blend, or even cotton if you keep an eye on it, (it will rot pretty quickly in the elements.)

You just want to use something that grips and has a little stretch to it.

Ah, ok. This is where a little stretch from paracord is a good thing. Thanks!

As long as you stretch it tight while lashing.

I took two pieces of the 10' chain link fence top rail and cut one in two, 5' each, and one at 6' and 4' so I can have different lengths.

I use the 14' combination most but could get by with 12', I think. Unless your buying a 12' piece, I'd leave yourself more length, but you should be good with 12'. (you can cut more off but it's hard to add back... )
