thru hiking the AT w/ hammock

Michele, there will be lots of others hanging this year, i'm leaving march 27th i will be reading the shelter books to see how you all are making out in the first few weeks with the colder weather. keep coming up with all these ideas and such you'll end up with the trail name daydreamer or some thing along those lines. you sound so pumped up for this hike, your passing around alot of good energy great posts see you in 2007 somewhere i'm sure.

That would be nice, but I can not even find a good journal program that will coexist with WhiteBlaze. So chances are this will not happen here.

Maybe for the time being there could be a link to a list and links to members journals on other sites where they hammocked the whole way. That could be a useful resource for someone asking questions about long term hammock use.

In '08 I plan to use my hammock the whole way. The target start date is 6 April - but I will take the BMT for the first 12% of the trail. Maybe I will see her out there.

thats awesome,when i hiked the whites this past september i hung every night except at madison springs hut and lake of clouds hut.

I plan on heading out in mid-March sometime on the AT, and will be hanging. Just recovering from a broken left ankle...don't ask. It should be ready to go...See ya there!

hanging is the only way to fly,i hate the ground and hard shelter floors

The rules are like this for using shelters in the GSMNP. These rules are the thruhiker rules:

1: A thruhiker is one that BEGINS his hike at least 50 miles before and ENDS 50 miles After the GSMNP.

2: Generally there are 3 to 4 shelter spots always open for the thruhikers. Example is a 12 person shelter, the Park service will only book or reserve 8 of the spots, leaving 4 open for the thrus.

3: The thrus are required to use the shelters UNTIL they become full. After that time it is ok to tent within 50 feet of the shelter.

4: Generally a thruhiker will go ahead and tent outside HOPING that the shelter becomes full by nightfall. If a Ranger or trailrunner appears, give him your shelter spot for the night

If any of this causes a problem, move to the shelter. At Mollies Ridge in 2006, we had 25 tents OUTSIDE the shelter, a Ridgerunner was there, a Ranger was there and everyone was happy. This was on April 15, 2006. Use common sense, BE NICE and everything will work out fine. The Ridgerunners and Park Rangers main job is to prevent too many people being at one spot or shelter at a time. They may ask you where you are going tomorrow and make a suggestion based on the number of hikers they expect to arrive where you are going. This is a suggestion only but worth considering. If a Ridgerunner gives you a hard time as a thruhiker, you are probably a real loser to begin with
