    Question Gütermann Thread

I picked up the following Gütermann thread at Joann's. It's 100% polyester but the fact that this spool has 2734 yards of thread makes me ask whether this stuff is thick enough for hammock and tarp construction. The versions Backwoods Dreamer sells only have 765 and 437 yards.

    Any ideas?

that's overlock thread.. used mostly to make fancy edging stitches.
you should pro'lly use the gutterman #ca02778 upholstery thread for outdoor apps.

I've used overlock thread for projects and it works fine. But it is thinner. The regular household sewing thread would be fine. I would not worry about using the upholstery thread unless you are doing commercial work. Then it might be worth while to do so. For light duty and relatively infrequent use the thread you have should be fine.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Yup. Overlock thread, for a specific type of sewing machine. Usually this is used with a Serger.

As Rev said, it will work - so long as what you're using it for is light duty / infrequent use. If it's a heavy use item or something like tree huggers, you may be wise to upgrade.

Gutermann's "Sew All" type of thread is their "Mara" line. If it's Mara 70, it's Tex 40. If it's Mara 100 it's Tex 30. Those two weights are fine for home sewing machines and outdoor gear. Mara 70 is what you find in most outdoor gear supplies stores.

I use Mara 70 or 100 on 90% of my projects, and occasionally some Tera 40 (Tera is a much much much stronger thread, still a Tex 40 in size though).

Gutermann makes lots of thread styles (as do most all the thread companies), so it can be somewhat tricky finding the right one.

op states he wants to make hammocks and tarps. i would NOT use a light duty thread for either of these projects. that serger/overlock thread is about 3lb test. pull on it to make sure. i would never use thread like that for loads. stuff sacks, maybe (at best)

Thanx for the responses. I'll be sure to get a better thread for any hammock or tarp work. Better save than sorry.
