I used to go down when I was a boy scout. It is a great place! Really February to March is good (or the equivalent months in fall) because it can get hot in the summer. I mean HOT. Right now the bugs aren't bad at all, we didn't have any problems during the day but they did come out at night. Mainly 3" to 4" spiders, but there were some flying bugs around the waters edge. They do get crazy bad in the summer! The water is almost completely still, so you aren't fighting a current really. Of course, you aren't getting any help either! We camped at a site about 6 or 7 miles in and that took us 2 1/2 to 3 hours. We were going at a fairly relaxed pace, as I said before the wife is pregnant, so I did most of the paddling. There are campsites all around the swamp, but camping in the swamp overnight is more restricted. It's a bit different from when I was a kid and now they have composting outhouses near the designated sites. This is the official site - http://www.fws.gov/okefenokee/WildernessCanoeing.html

    Really nice trip!
    Thanks for sharing.
Makes me want to go too!
So now you can show your son/daughter pics of their first camping trip. (Tell'em they slept through the entire trip)

That reminds me of my one and only canoe trip through part of the Everglades. A snake dropped out of a tree and landed on the back of my neck. Fortunately it slid off me and landed in the water. I had to check my undies after that experience. I'm not sure what I would have done if it had fallen into the bottom of the canoe, but I'm quite sure it wouldn't have been pretty.

BTW....those are some pretty big Lizards!

Awesome post! Gonna have to hit up Osceola NF now! Live paddling swamps and with gators. My favorite part of living in Florida.

Awesome pics and not too far away. I'll have to add this as a future trip.

We entered on the eastern side, at the Suwannee Canal. The Stephen Foster entrance is closer to the larger lakes.
