    show me your foot pad

i'm looking for ideas on what to use and how to design a foot pad for use with my winter phoenix UQ. (i'll be using a sleeping bag as top insulation)
    • how long should it be? should it start at where the 3/4 UQ stops or does it just need to be under your feet?
    • what kind of foam is best?
    • is insultex too warm to use inside the bag?
    • do you put yours inside or outside your TQ/ sleeping bag?
    • if inside, i've heard of some people who make thiers the same shape as the inside of the bag so that it wraps around your feet...kind of cone shaped?

hoping you guys can upload some pics of what you use or describe it.

If I recall correctly, Shug puts his inside the footbox. That's the first place, I'll give one a try. I'll be using a bag for a TQ too.

Shug uses one of the self-inflatable air pads. Neo-air or something like that. I'm going to try and use the back pad to my pack if I can get away with it. Probably go with the air pad when I'm not spending all my money on packs and hammocks.

I just use a wally world blue pad I had laying around, cut it to size and throw it in the footbox of my TQ. One day I may get a Neo-Air or something similar, but this works just fine.

After a lot of cutting and experimenting I ended up with a pair of "volara" foam pads 20"x30". I can stack them in the footbox for a significant amount of insulation. That size is also OK for wrapping one around the shoulders and another under my backside. I also use them for a sit pad around the fire before heading to bed.

I use a ThermRest sit pad in my footbox of TQ. Did use some closed cell under my TQ but sometimes got moisture. None with the ThermaRest in my TQ.

I use this pad from MEC:

I put it between 2 layers of my mockingbird in the footbox area. The end channel of my 3s Phoenix snugs up nicely against the pad when my feet are in there. The pad rolls up around your lower legs a bit.

dont have pics of mine, but it resembles this one.

    http://www.prolitegear.com/montbell-...on-pad-30.html

4 pcs of ccf, each in their own nylon pocket stitched togeterh. I have no idea of the dimesions, I sized it go fit my rear very generously and also fit my rear conservatively when folded in half. Maybe 16"x16" or so.

I put it between the layers on my DIY DBL 1.1. It seems to stay there. Originally, I was using a solid piece of ccf an had a piece of shock cord on it so if it jumped out of the hammck, I could use my foot on the RL to pull it back. It did this frequently. The new foliding version seems to stay in place MUCH better between the layers.

It does make a sit good sit pad/ kneel pad and if I go to a full UQ at some point, I likely will still carry this for a sit pad. It takes lots of space, but very little weight and it's worth carrying.

Well, I respectfully disagree.... This is hammockforums.net right? Tinkering, adjusting and refining your gear set-up is what we do. It's half the fun.

Here's one of my pads. This one is fairly "pimped" as it's 1/4" GG Thinlight with a layer of heat reflective material (think car sun shade) with 3" fins that wrap around my calves. It weighs 2.15ozs.

Having anything in my TQ drives me nuts (just me perhaps) so I put this in-between my BB layers. I also found that a small metal paper clamp does a great job of securing the pad in place. I just line the pad up in the footbox and clip it to the outside hammock layer. Works well to prevent shifting.

I use an UberLite self inflating torso pad under my legs, outside the TQ. It also acts as the frame pad for my G4 back pack.
