7/64 is plenty strong and is probably what most here use but if you are worried you could go with 1/8 inch. The JRB system is good if you do not want to DIY and saves money vs. buying the individual pieces.

Most whoopie slings are made from a dyneema cording (like Amsteel) and the splices de-rate the sling less than 10% of the cord's rating.
7/64" Amsteel is rated to about 1600lbs, and 1/8" Amsteel is rated to about 2500lbs
Either is more than sufficient for hammocks.
