    HH A-sym Let's talk downpours...really wet weather.

Well I just got it between two trees today in preparation for natures response to a fantastic sunny warm day's and cold nights of a weekend-rain the next three days. (PA)

So I guess I am going to find out the hard way. But as I look at the tarp when it first arrived it looked like it was on backwards and there were clear points that are exposed to the sides. So I flipped the top so the guy lines matched and I am still surprised at the smallness of the HH over the size of the cheap y I had before.

What are your experiences with the normal tarp in wet weather and do you have suggestions?

been through some of the worst.

in storm mode i angle the tarp down even tighter then your photo and i NEVER tie out the hammock.

Why don't you tie the hammock out?

I like to connect the tarp to the trees using its own line instead of sharing the hammock suspension. Using the default connection that HH suggests (as you have shown), the tarp always goes a little slack when you climb in and allows a little flapping.

Also, the separate connections can be moved up and down the tree to allow you to configure for the expected weather. Hang tight for wind and rain or open it up for great views while blocking the dew from settling on you.

I've been through some very bad storms in mine without any water inside.

i have found no reason to. just more lines. i cut the lines off and don't miss them. i always thought it would catch water if things got real bad.

u misunderstood. i was talking about the the angle of the tarp to the ground. practicably touching the hammock for storms.

The hammock stick outs that much more. I want to make this tarp work so bad for my expedition, as I like the small and openess of it, but the experience I had in the rain, pitching it the closest I could to the hammock, and even a good deal above it, abgles, everything, still managed to get my uq a little wet. I've heard stories of sgt rock holding out in a tropical storm, I just wish I knew how.

I hiked the entire AT with the stock tarp. I would set it up attached to the suspension like the instructions say. Although I never got wet, and it was a very wet year, I use a bigger tarp nowadays. I also didn't use an UQ since they were just being invented that year. That would be my primary worry.
