Great trip report! This makes me yearn for some solo trips. Did you keep your side up on your poles like that the whole night?

I did. In a tent I've worried about wind direction only a little, but I remembered all the mentioning here and in Shug's videos of paying more attention to it in a tarp / hammock setting. Paid off in spades. Picked the perfect spot and orientation. I got zero blow in from the leeward side and it was open about 3.5 ft all night. Made for a nice window on the woods.

Congratulations on the successful soggy weather hang. That looks like a great way to spend the night and an even better next day.

AWESOME report and great pics! I'm on the verge of my first solo backcountry hammock excursion, too; my BB and UQ are both set to arrive today. And yes...I called in sick! Thanks for mentioning both the foot height and tarp set-up, as I expect a wide learning curve to get everything dialed in. But man, what a classroom, eh?
“Simplicity in all things is the secret of the wilderness and one of its most valuable lessons. I think the matter of simplicity goes further than just food, equipment, and unnecessary gadgets; it goes into the matter of thoughts and objectives as well. When in the wilds, we must not carry our problems with us or the joy is lost.” -Sigurd Olson
My buddy and I were planning a big sur trip that same weekend and due to road closures we opted for Big Basin Redwoods SP. It rained on us for 10 hrs straight. Needless to say, we woke up to a myriad of ponds 4 to 5 inches deep around us.
Nice. I have people up in the SC mountains (Big Basin used to be in my beat) and they said the weather was wicked. Luckily I am South of the closures, already planning the follow-up trip with the buddy who backed out. Oh yeah Justin, I know you're reading this, you lurkin mofo you!
