I know i might get roasted for this but bang for your buck sometimes means sacrificing comfort. I would get a couple blue wally world pads make a spe use it under the therma rest and buy a good top quilt. With this your ready to go to ground if you had to its just not the most comfortable solution.

How much money? A $400 down underquilt and weathershield is nice.

What I have used and works for me is an under quilt that I know can go down to 20 (rated for 30 AHE New River UQ), and a sleeping bag rated for 10 (Snugpak Sleeper Xtreme about $68.00 on line), and its all supplemented with a couple of poncho liners that I use to tuck into cold spots. With a CCF pad to supplement the lower temps or don't use it for warmer temps. I find that it works well.
I also like to kayak camp and the thought of my gear getting wet has led me to only getting man made insulation. The New River under quilt is very light, I don't find any of my insulation is very heavy. Just haning my own hang, I hape this helps.
I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority. - E. B. White (1899 - 1985)

Well I have been considering a UQ and TQ. My budget will allow be to purchase the MollyMac Baby Orca and the Light hiker bed roll. Then you can bring your Sleeping bag with you too and use the LHBR to supliment. It should cost about 280$ thats what a down UQ costs and it has been said the combo will get you down to 30* or more.

I have three underquilts, two JRB's and a Warbonnet. My most comfortable hammock setup is a Hennessy Expedition with a thermarest in a Speer SPE.

if your going to stick with Hammocks get yourself a good UQ ...
there are many out there you just got to find the one that will fit your needs
nothing beats a good UQ...once you get one you will never go back to a pad
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

solo paddler, i'm in the same boat as you.
as soon as my tax return arrives i am going to order a full length synthetic UQ (Wilderness Logics) for my hamm.
i'm good with ccf pads but, for me, they have to be customized for warmth and can get sweaty real quick.
i use a bag for a top quilt supplemented by clothes and throws for cold conditions.

I first made due with a Northface Alegheny sleeping bag rigged up as a UQ and down sleepingbag as a TQ. Next step was to purchase a UQ and still use a sleepingbag as a TQ. Final step was UQ and TQ. Did this as funds were available. Now have 3 UQ's and one TQ. Have 3 boys so they still use varius combinations of bags as TQ's and UQ's. Wintertime I still use a sub-zero sleepingbag as a TQ. MY .02 cents worth.

On another note. Why will the same people that give you their .02 cents worth only give you a penny for your thoughts.
