Stuff the pockets with down pillows instead of Underquilt?

Someone must have tried this?
Does it work/suck.

If it works reasonably, i plan to sew small down pillows in
pertex(or similar) to stuff down the pockets.

Hehe, i just came up with this bright idea to bring in a sleeping mat in the hammock 2 years ago.

And now i found that you guys been using Underquilts for years

Gosh, i wonder how my forefathers survived

the AL guys were talking about doing the same thing w/ their clarks.

Hrm...now there's an idea. Just sew up some DWR bags of down that fit right into the Clark's pockets. Don't even need to remove them when packing up...just squish them down. Great idea, moski!

My original plan was to take them out and stuff them in a stuff bag.
But your idea, just to leave them is better.

I posted this a few weeks ago when someone else asked about the Clark NA and insulation...

For cold weather sleeping I use a DIY Speer SPE. I don't use an UQ in the standard fashion. The NA comes with 6 pockets underneath which is supposed the be the solution to not having to carry an UQ. Yes and no. Great Idea for gear storage and the like but who wants to have to unpack everything from their bag at night just to stay warm, when you have to pack it all up the next morning? I don't, so my solution was to make six down "pillows". I reclaimed down from old coats at used clothing stores, then sewed them into shapes roughly 2/3 of the size of each of the pockets. Leaving me a little room for gear and boots. They weight next to nothing and pack up with my hammock.

I'll try to post some pics in the next week or so when life becomes less busy..

So those pillows, are they really thick?
Do they fill all the vertical space in the pockets?
Or do you have some air between the pillow and your butt ?

If you keep the pillows in hammock when gearing down,
was the stuff sack big enough ?

The pillows are pretty thick, but yes there is some space (not much) between them and the underside of the hammock. I can cram everything inside the clark's built in stuff sack but I choose to use a bishops bag. It's my simple "snake skin". It's still almost just as small but easier to pack away.

I thought I was getting a HH, but now I'm looking at this Clark and coveting it.

Will it keep me warm and dry in Oregon?

Annie, Have you looked at the Claytor Jungle hammock. With it's double bottom you can put in pads, which won't move around and you cannot really feel, youi can put in pillows, coats, space blankets, whatever, UNTIL you get an underquilt. Then you still have a double layer hammock to put your pad in during emergency cold weather. I just don't think you can beat them. Just my opinion. When my no-net double bottom Claytors arrive, that will make 5 that I own. I use them to lend to others and keep them for my boys when they can get away to backpack with the old man. I made a DIY Claytor for myself.
Claytors are used by five armies. That is quite an endorcement. Google Claytor Hammock if you haven't already. No matter what you get you are going to enjoy it. One thing I have noticed is there is a lot of loyalty in the Clark and Claytor owners especially, as well as all the others. Cheers, Mule
