    10 % permethrin

O.K. just to verify what i read here, went to feed store and bought 10% permethrin. Now if I mix it 19 to 1 part water, I will have the proper solution to treat my socks, pants, hammock and ALL clothing for tick and skeeter protection. I will be spraying it from old windex bottle. and thinking about it I might just treat my wives cat with it as to protect it from ticks...yea!!!

    That last line might have been a joke, but incase it is not;

DO NOT LET YOUR CAT NEAR PERMETHRIN!!!!!

    It will kill the cat.
    I ride a recumbent.
I like to HAM it up on the CW.
    I use Linux.

You should mix the solution as follows:

    1 part 10% stock solution + 19 parts water = 0.5% solution

I've been following the Permethrin threads in preparation to treating some of my outdoor gear. One thing that has been raised is Sawyers is the only one that claims itself good for clothing etc. If you got some other brand (something about the filler used), you might try it on something you don't mind getting ruined before doing the rest. Just sayin'...

Reminds me, I've got to get some of this.

I did this years ago with good results.

Aside from cats and other living things, is there anything we don't want to get the solution on? I know its not DEET but I just wanted to check.

Probably this thread. More specifically, this post from PapaSmurf.

I use Sawyers. 4 years and counting, never had a problem.

Okay, I'm one of the folks who bought some of that 10% stuff at Tractor Supply Company, intended for livestock. I did dilute it as stated above and tested it on a bandana and some socks. The first time around, it smelled strong (in my opinion; I have a sensitive nose). I washed the test items, but could still smell them, held up to my nose.

A few days later, I decided to give it one more test, and if it still smelled so strong, I was going back to Sawyer's. However, this time around, the smell wasn't bad at all. I'm not even sure if it was any stronger than Sawyer's.

The one difference is I dried the first batch in the guest bathroom with open window, but the weather was humid. This time, I dried the second batch in the garage, with both garage doors open and no humidity.

So, for the time being, I'm saying the Tractor Supply stuff works fine. I'm headed out next week for 52 miles on the AT. If it keeps the bugs off me, and doesn't smell much, I'll be a happy camper.

You are supposed to wash the stuff after you soak it. The Army says there is an adequate residual present after five washings, at least with a set of cotton jungle fatigues, which is what was used in the test.

I just noticed something disturbing. I always buy Permanone from Wally World but I've been to two this weekend and neither of them carried it anymore. I guess I'll have to start soaking things. Aerosol was so much quicker.
