    I find www.trails.com to be a great first stop..strictly for 'places to go' though; used to hang out at GORP.com for odds and ends of tips, till I came here...
    KM (who had to really rack brains for those, it has been a while)

    Postholer.com is IMO the best trail journal site around, with some really great mapping features (for the Pacific Crest Trail in particular) for many trails. The forums there aren't very active though.
