I say forget the tarp in general! Chance it! Haha. Ok. Don't do that! My plans were to do what many others have now done with the cuben with doors. But at the time I couldn't back off any more trips and I didn't have the money or 6-8 weeks to wait, and being newbish, I needed more than my stock hennessy tarp. So I ordered the superfly. Full coverage I can carry the extra ounces for the time being and it would work in all seasons. After that I got a maccat standard which I love and is officially my go to tarp. But the superfly is always there when I need it and I like knowing that.

A good middle ground could be a rectangle tarp. Ends can fold into doors if need be. Brian from OES sells his 8'x10' for $85. Not to bad, 16oz. Though I think I'd go 10.5'x7' and that would be a nice sized tarp.

I can't believe I'm saying this but the few extra ounces won't kill you until you can afford a smaller tarp for lighter seasons :-x

Wags, I know. I've already seen a priest to confess my sins against the grams. Haha. I'm still so new that I don't have set system and pack weight, but I'm close. My goal is to get it as low as comfortably possible so when I need to bring the extra 10oz of tarp, and extra 24oz of clothing I'm still far under 15lbs.

I say start with coverage and warmth and save the weight elsewhere. Later you can deal with smaller and lighter when you learn what will get you throguh comfortably.

I agree they are a winter item and I wish I had a tarp with doors to give an opinion. I just know that last weekend in the demon rain storm on burrells ford I wish I had atleast one door. It was coming from the side
