    Coated Ripstop Trouble

I'm attempting to make my first diy tarp. I ordered some 1.6oz ripstop - coated from backwoodsdaydreamer.com. It is almost finished, but I thought of something. One side of the fabric is like regular fabric. The other side feels smoother and looks shiny. My question is, do I need to have the shiny side up to be waterproof or is it waterproof both ways.

    Thanks in advance

Check with Scott at Backwoods Daydreamer. He'll know if its coated and meant for tarp use. And which side would be best for water resistance.

Every tarp with a one-side-coated fabric that I have ever seen has the coated side down - I think that is so the coating is not exposed as directly to the sun and abrasion of tree-debris, which might cause premature deterioration of the coating. Let the raw fabric take the beating of the rain, falling debris, and sun - and protect the coating.

But it is waterproof either way.
