    Don't know for sure but my guess is you didn't tie the knot correctly. It seems to be one of those knots where people find variations that don't work well. There are at least 2 variations I have seen to mess it up.

    I tried it with some rope, and it worked fine. I think what I did differently was to keep the knot close to the bend in the rope, so it cinches up tight around the bend. I will give it another shot!

    Can I use webbing instead of rope to whip the hammock with the double sheet bend?

    It has worked for me with both the webbing and rope I have used. But how well most any knot works is dependent on what you are tying it with.
