It does work but you better have something beefy in the ground. First time I tried it I tied to the bottom of a post. second time I put a piece of 3/4 rebar in the ground and pulled that bad boy up.
1) used two stake out points
2) set stakes at angle into the ground
3) the farther out the staking points the more the lateral pull instead of a horizontal pull

Thanks BWG and Randy ... two great ideas that can be done with break downable poles.
Question, how much lateral force is actually on the poles, I've got two Bubogears collapsible tarp poles that I could use in a pinch and not porch out the tarp. They aren't as stong as conduit but should bear the weight if it's directly downward??
