I might have had more luck with a Zebco and salmon eggs too, then again I might have gotten a $150 fine for doing it.

I guess I'll stick with my fly rod and fish up higher for now. Catching those natives is a bit more challenging than the rainbows they stock in the lower portion anyway.
That being said, I'll probably have to pop down to the NC side of the Smokies this weekend and see if I can get my fix for some larger wild trout.

This may be up higher in the thread, sorry if its a repeat, but I just looked at the Horse Creek website from the link in the first post and it says the campground and picnic area are closed until further notice due to tornado damage.

The campground and the picnic area are closed. The back country site where we're going wasn't touched by the storms.

I walked around in the campground area. The place was a real mess and looked to have taken a pretty direct hit from a tornado. The Iron Forge campground on the other side of Horse Creek is open. Hopefully we'll have more of the place to ourselves with the main campground closed.

In contrast, the back country camp site on the Poplar Cove trail is in perfect shape. Hopefully we can get some rain a couple of days before the trip to get the water level to a more fish friendly depth. If it does not rain, we'll still have ample water sources for our camping needs.

    'more fish friendly' ??
    I thought fishing was out??
From the intended backcountry site exactly how long is the hike to the closest fishing hole--just so I'll know whether to bring the Tenk.....

Fishing is definitely an option. The restrictions are below the Squibb Creek intersection with Horse Creek. Above that is open to anyone. Our campsite is well uphill from that point. The closest fishing would be less than half a mile away. I'd like to try my luck near Squibb Creek Falls which would be about a 3 mile hike (6 mile roundtrip not counting fishing) from camp.

I am still deliberating on whether or not I am going to spring for my fishing license. I've been considering giving fly fishing another shot, just hesitant to pull the trigger on a flyrod.

It sure isn't cheap in Tennessee. I think it was $47 for an instate with trout stamp and issuing fee.

I am thinking about going up there tomorrow for a while. I kind of want to try out some trees.
