If you're familiar with Tellico Plains, then you probably know Citico/Slickrock and Bald River. Those are some awesome places to hike and hang year round. There's an abandoned homestead off of the BMT in Citico that has a good water source and an old orchard. I believe it is over 3000 feet, so that might make for a nice option.

OK - let's suggest a spot other than my backyard, say between the Smokies and Big South Fork.

Those two areas would probably be the most restricted as both require permits and one of them requires using designated camp sites. The other wilderness and national forest areas do not have the same restrictions and permitting.
Not that there is anything wrong with BSF or the GSMNP, but they are not as flexible as the other areas.

That's roughly between GSMNP and BSF - and I've never been there (4 year resident). What about a little weekend overnighter?

If it looks like we might have more than five people or something like that, there is a pretty good spot at Horse Creek. There is an old horse camp off of Horse Creek Rd on the Poplar Cove Trail. It's about a 2.5 mile hike from the trailhead and has enough good trees to handle at least a dozen hangers. A stream goes right by it. From there, dayhikes up Sarvis Cove or over to Round Knob would be readily available. There is supposed to be an old civil war graveyard that I've never found up on the ridge.
The route up there can even allow for mountain bikes if you're hardy enough to climb it.

Frozen Head State Park is between the GSMNP and the BSFNRRA.

    Frozen Head State Park

Or, for others, Find a Park.

Frozen Head is a pretty neat area, but it can be pretty hot and dry in the Summer. The waterfalls there tend to be reduced to a trickle that time of year.

I'd like to make it for the Barkley Marathon sometime! I don't know about competing, but watching would be fun!
