Nope, sometimes under my hammock, other times I rig a small tarp for them to sleep under. Mostly they just sleep nearby where ever they feel like. They sure do keep the critters away!

I've been doing it since I was in high school. Still do it on occasion when I can get away but none of my Gorge Rat buddies can make it. My lovely wife makes me carry a PLB now when I go alone (Not a SPOT). Says she love me ... but might be just to be able to recover the body for insurance purposes!

I've noticed ... and I think even Shug has had the experience ... some folks see an old fart like me in the woods all alone ... they immediate think "AXE MURDERER!!!!" and give you a tense smile, nod of the head and the hairy eyeball as ya pass!

Makes me giggle ... but it's another reason I prefer stealth camping.

Still I like hanging with my buddies Ken, Jimbo and Glen when we can all get together. They "ain't right either"!

WARNING: Will discuss Rhurbarb Strawberry Pie and Livermush at random.

Mine does. But, she is only 22 pounds. Here is a video of Kiba's first over nighter. We had a great time!

My little one is 40 lbs, and the big one is 70 lbs. Not a good fit in the hammock!

This is my bigger dog, Hunter.

I find that I get home sick and miss the wife and kids even on a one nighter. If you can plan a tiring high mile hike right out of the gate you might fall asleep as the sun is setting. A small paper back book could help too. I work an eve/mid swing shift so if all else fails 10mg of Ambien will do the trick!

Hey Grey - I feel your pain. I go solo 90% of the time. I was really jumpy at first as well, but I can tell you that the more you go out there by yourself, the more comfortable you'll be. I also agree with what others have said. If I've had a long day and a good feed, I usually find that I sleep like a rock.

Geez guys!!... it's been less than an hour! Anyway, I guess this is one of those things I'll just have to get over.

I wish I could take my pup, but she's a mid-size boxer nearing 5 years. And I don't think she would exactly appreciate being in the hammock with me. Thanks!

My first night in a hammock

was also my first night solo. About 12 years old, in an old US Army jungle hammock, pitched in the woods about a half mile from my house.

    Scared witless.

Every sound, every wind rustle had me on edge. But as I matured, the fear went away. Maybe you need to spend a semi-sleepless solo night in a hammock to get used to the woods.
