    Magical script-fu to convert weights and distances

    As a person who grew up with a measurement system that makes sense, I find it frustrating having to continually use google to convert measurements to something that is understandable.

    Could there be some magical script-fu that when numbers that are followed by oz, m, or any other measurement symbol, it highlights the number to indicate that if you hover over it, it will show it in the metric system?

    I'm probably dreaming here, but thought it might be something someone in the know-how could easily create

    Cheers,

    Jason.

    I know what you mean - I can't think in Fahrenheit for example but I just memorised what 70, 50 and freezing point was when converted to centigrade and that pretty much does it when reading threads on quilts.

    It would be clever if there was some web-based jiggery pokery that could do conversions on the fly though.

    Just download this to your computer and it does basically every conversion you can think of.

    That's handy, thanks. Living in Canada we use metric but I am at an age where I sort of use both metric and imperial. Being a close neighbour to the States makes it hard to use strictly metric. As a result I find it hard to visualize metric measures. If a tarp is 3.3 metres long for example I have to convert it to feet to see the distance in my head of if you say cut a lenght of cordage 54 cm long I have to convert to inches to visualize it.

    Hmm

    I would think there's either a plugin for your browser that will do this or perhaps a script for Greasemonkey.

    I'd like one to convert between cubic inches and liters.

    The only issue is that a lot of product pages are flash which the script may not be able to detect as unit that needs translating.

    Below is a cut and paste from a web site that explains the EASY way to convert temperatures back and forth:

    ..........When you are visiting the Celsius world, and you hear that the outside temperature is 25 degrees, and you're wondering if you should wear short sleeves or a heavy jacket, just multiply that temperature by 2 and add 30. Easy to do in your head, and it quickly tells you that the temperature is about 25 x 2 + 30 = 80 degrees. Definitely short sleeves.

    F = 2 x C + 30

    It's easy to remember, easy to work out in your head, and accurate to within a few degrees over the range a tourist is interested in. (Just don't plan to visit Antarctica.) If you want to be more accurate, just remember that the result of this formula is exact at 50 degrees Fahrenheit, a little too high for higher temperatures, and a little too low for lower ones.

    CELSIUS users visiting the United States (is there anywhere else that uses Fahrenheit?), the formula C = 1/2 x (F - 30) is almost as easy to use.

    IN SUMMARY:

    F = 2 x C + 30
    C = F - 30 2

    The camping hammock lends luxurious comfort and solitude to that which would otherwise be a vulgar frolic in the dirt.

    Many thanks for all the replies

    I guess the issue is I like to be able to read something without having to run another program or go to another website to be able to fully understand what it is I'm reading.

    Yes, I'm lazy, but seeing as the majority of the world uses the metric system, surely HF should make the switch too?
