DIY - The $5.00 Easy Hammock Pillow

I needed a pillow for my hammock and wanted to make one with what I had laying around the house without spending big $$ on it.

So I came up with this simple solution for under $5.00.

I had to purchase the pillow case material for which I opted for a soft velvety material from Joann fabrics.

I wanted something simple that could easily be maintained, take apart, cleaned, washed and put back together quickly.

Here is the materials list it and associated costs:

    1. washer mesh bag 13"x10" (.50 cents)
    2. synthetic pillow batting 30"x15" (free from old pillow)
    3. 2"x2"x8" foam core (free from supplies on hand)
    4. pillow cover 13"x10" with 5" fold in tab at one end ($2.00)

I am sure most have an old pillow laying around that they can use as a material donnor.
If not you can purchase batting and foam by the yard from most fabric stores like Joann's.

If you don't have a mesh bag, you can make one very easily yourself and skip the zipper and do a simple pillow cover fold instead.
Joann sells the mesh fabric for $1.49 a yard, 1/3 of a yard should do the trick... use one of their discount coupons of 40-50% .

This is a very easy project, took me about 30 minutes to complete it and I hand sewed the covers.

This is how I made mine:

Measured the mesh bag to determine the lenght / width for my batting

Cut batting to size and lay the foam core centerd along the length and about 1-2" from the width at one end.
Sandwich the foam core by folding the batting over it.

Insert the batting / foam bundle into the mesh bag making sure it spreads and streches evenly throughout against all four corners.
Once satisfied with the fit, close the zipper.

Cut and sew your pillow cover to size.

Insert the mesh bag into the pillow cover and tuck in the long tab.

    You are all done...

I have been using this pillow for about two months now and find it to be extremely comfortable.
It provides the right amount of support and loft for my neck in a hammock.

I carry a spare cover with me for those occasions when it may get dirty or too smelly while on the trail.
Swapping pillow cases takes all but 1 minute and they can easily be washed and line dried.

That looks about the size of the travel pillow I use in my hammock. You might be able to use travel pillow cases too. Great work!
