Unplanned overnight Hang...deck of ferry boat to Oshima Island...

This time of year, we do a bunch of scuba trips to nearby islands, taking an overnight ferry there.

Sometimes, the boat is full and we aren't able to reserve sleeping births, in which case we have to sleep on one of the upper decks (all protected from any rain from above, though blowing rain can make it in at times).

We usually rent the ship blankets and sleep on the floor...all the upper decks are TOTALLY full of lounging humanity for July and August...

...but this time, me and one of my group members had our hammocks with us. I had meant to use my rig on the island. To my surprise, we were able to hang them on the deck, as long as we anchored them to the steel beams...one of the ship's crew showed us...totally unexpected score!

The other diver only had biners (no suspension) so he was quite high off the cement deck...

I hung my Eno double and was good to go, though occasionally an unwilling source of attention and photos from the other passengers.

    Anyway, here are some photos...

    -High-hanging diver in my group
-Him standing up to show how high he actually was
-My rig closer to the deck
-My wife and I enjoying Grapefruit Chuhai, elixir of the gods..
-My diving group on Oshima Island

...as a side note...we had a typhoon coming (days away) but still felt the effects. The ship was rocking a good bit and the wind was steady from my side. I was rocking HARD all night...

I still can't believe they were OK with it...

After 15 years of hearing the response "abunai" (dangerous) to virtually any out of the ordinary proposal, I'm really floored that they were OK with this, compared to other relatively mundane stuff I've been disallowed from doing...

Yeah! This will make deck "camping" much more enjoyable on future trips...

    Thanks!

Actually, I'm a mild-mannered university instructor by (week)day ...the diving thing is my weekend gig...I started the operation about 6 or 7 years ago...I have a blast...
