Is it safe to hang with this suspension?

I acquired a Henessey Extreme Racer secondhand and am excited to try it out. It's in great shape except for one spot as seen below. None of the stands look broken or cut, more like a knot got jammed and in undoing it the strands got discombobulated and some of the fibers abraded. Can I use the hammock as is or do I need to replace the suspension first?

IMO in a word... yes. You can probably use the hammock as is under the right conditions. But I would replace the suspension. Abraded rope fibers are sometimes benign and sometimes not. You are going to want to replace the suspension sooner or later anyway... so do it now and get what you want from the beginning.

Edit: It is difficult to say where that damage is on the rope. If you can hang it without putting weight on that damage you are probably ok. But as I said... most likely you will be changing the the suspension anyway.

What they said. Plus it's a great excuse to get yourself some whoopie slings . If you like playing with cordage, you can make a pair for around $8--VERY convenient and super strong. One way or the other, you're better off replacing the suspension just to make sure you don't become that thing that goes bump in the night.
You're gonna need a bigger hammock

What is the minimum distance you need for whoopies?

Sorry, you posted just before I did, so I didn't see your concern about minimum distance. My whoopies add somewhere between an extra foot and a half to two feet to my hammock length. It hasn't been a problem for me thus far (and I have a LONG diy gathered end), but if it is a concern, I would stick to the guarda hitch. Sadly, I don't know what light weight cordage people are using for this type of suspension, but I'm certain someone will chime in soon. They always do.

    Okay, what do I want?

I'm new to this, my first and only other setup so far is a Henessey ULB with stock suspension that I rig with a Garda hitch and descending rings. I don't want anything heavier than what I already have. I'm not sure about whoopies b/c I understand you need a longer minimum distance to use them.

ETA: Oh, and it's my understanding you can't use amsteel with rings b/c it flattens and slips.
