    Going Hammock for back problems

    Greetings forum folks,

Just purchased a hammock and should be arriving in a couple days. I registered on the forum for some advice on hanging. I decided to give sleeping in a hammock full time a try.

One of the main reasons I am doing so is because of a herniated disc in my back that I have had for the the past 11 years or so. For the most part it isn't too bad as I exercise and stretch quite often. The major issue I have is with my sleeping position. Sleeping on my stomach causes issues with my lower back muscles, which I feel also causes me to toss and turn pretty often. I have always been a stomach sleeper as long as I can remember. I have using pillows as an option to keep my on my back during the night, but I always tend to wake up on my stomach still.

Hoping that using a hammock will help keep me off my stomach during the night and provide some lower-back muscle relief. I also have always loved laying in a hammock, but have never owned one.

Also going to take on a side project to keep myself busy. Going to make my own:

No reason for it to cost $600 without the beans. Haven't fully priced it yet, but can do for much less. Thinking I might throw a low end tempurpedic mattress inside of it, not sure how that will play out though.

Going to add you to the list of fulltimers, if you try it I don't believe you'll go back to a bed.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.

Hi Raz, Welcome. Good your making your own on the cheap. I'm not too sure that hammock design will provide much back support. You are either going to love it first lay or hate it.
Several members here hang full time hopefully they will chime in and help you out.

    Hi Raz, welcome to HF

I've been a sufferer of regularly slipping dics for years. I don't sleep full time in my hammock, but when I do I find it really helps. If I go to sleep with a sore back, I wake up fine.

I used to sometimes wake up in my hammock on my front or side but this has gradually stopped and I always sleep on my back now.

I hope you have a similar experience.

YMMV, but my back (with three shrinking discs)

loves to be in a hammock.

I can side-sleep in my HH, CJH, and WBBB or lie half on my back. Pretty much level. But I believe that it is the lack of pressure points and therefore reduction in muscle stiffness that keeps my back loose.

    Good luck with your endeavour!

    Jim
